All you need is one! That’s my response every time I speak with a fellow colleague wanting to start a business or become a freelancer. They always states, “It seems to come easy for you to get more projects.” But actually, it didn’t.
When I got started, I was putting in twenty proposals a day and constantly promoting my services. After two weeks, I got my first break. A willing client was very considerate of giving me a chance. Of course it was based upon my experience and knowledge of a particular software, but it was my very first time working remotely for someone. I made it my mission and duty to do a good job for this client because I knew that this could lead to me winning more projects. The client was so impressed he wrote me a great review and 5star rating on the freelancing website. After that, it became a snowball effect. I was still putting in a lot of proposals but I had my resume, rating, and review to help me win the projects.
Now of course there will be hurdles or hiccups along the way. Everything is a challenge. Sometimes life will throw you a curveball, but that’s when you expect the unexpected. The number one trait clients look for in a service provider is dependability. There are so much technology out there where you can keep your client informed of any situations you may have. You also want to gain their trust and confidence in you that the work will be performed right. Even if it’s remotely, clients can hear that confidence in your voice. As a freelancer or small business, you don’t just give correct work, but quality and outstanding work, sometimes you have to go above and beyond for clients. Their reviews really do matter.
You have to remain persistent and determined to keep getting projects, perform quality work, get reviews or references, and market your services. When I use Moonlighting to promote my services, I post my opportunities and then share them via, Twitter and Facebook. I then take the link and post it to Linkedin. Oh my gosh the exposure and traffic I was getting! I love to hear my phone chime from the Moonlighting App that someone saved my opportunity and liked it! Soon I started to get in emails and calls about my services.
Since the snowball effect of projects after projects begin, I’ve changed my mindset from self-employed to a small business owner. I legally formed my business in 2011 (even though I’ve been doing this since 2009) and developed processes and systems to manage and perform my work. There’s processes for marketing like posting opportunities two times a day on websites for service providers like Moonlighting, responding to bids, marketing services, and posting ads. Once you start getting a lot of busy work, you will need management systems in place for organization, structure, and effectively perform the required services.
So start submitting proposals and bids, market your services, use freelancing websites like Moonlighting to get in more consistent clients! All you need is one good client and review! The rest will surely come!
I’ve helped many clients start their businesses and develop plans for their businesses. These are just the starting point when establishing a business. My question is, ” What is your next move? Many entrepreneurs or individuals seek guidance from a Consultant or Coach. We can develop road maps, plans of actions, and give you encouragement, but ultimately you have to take the steps and necessary actions to get out there and going. It takes hard work, determination, faith, and will power to step outside the box away from a 9 -5 into your own.
If you have a vision of your career or future, do you act on it? or let it go by? Sometimes we are granted a foresight of the path we suppose to be on for ourselves, but often times we become so worried about paying bills and being complacent with our 9-5 (not guaranteed, nothing is these days) that we won’t step out on faith and take risks. The definition of an Entrepreneur is RISK! You inherit all of the risks required to run a business from gains to losses, and government compliance, you deal with it all like an OWNER should. Our fear turns our won’t into can’t , impounding us with doubts that will take control over our lives if we let it.
My clients come to me with their ideas and businesses they want to open. As a Business Consultant and Coach I give you realization based upon research and numbers (profitable or not). No, I’m not the one who sells you pipe dreams and probably won’t agree with you all the time. However, the information and advice I give you is to help you and not harm you. I provide you with information to use to help you think , analyze, and set realistic goals for yourself and business.
Again, what is your plan? What is your vision telling you? What steps are you willing to take to act on your vision? Let us guide your vision by creating the roadmaps and plans you need to take your idea from concept to action!

It’s not uncommon for someone to dream a silly idea for a business. However, those that do, are known as inventors. What seems ridiculous to others, seems very creative and talented to some. There are business and organizations that are looking for those silly ridiculous thinking individuals that will love to brand and promote their idea. Inventors, do not let others opinions stop your dream!
I, as an example, was told my business will not be successful in my town. Through faith, knowledge, and hard work, I proved them wrong. Even in business management, you have to be creative for promoting your services. Yes, you may live in a business or economically disadvantage area, but does that mean you have to tailor your services or products to that area? No, that would be considered small town thinking. If you want to achieve your goals or increase your profits, you must think outside the box!

Do you let people decide your success for you? Or, is it your independent definition of yourself? Majority of the times, we intend to let our social surroundings critique and rate our success. We rely on society approval as if their future are in the hands of everyone. Success is one’s measurement after accomplishing a goal. The key character or variable in success is yourself. We need to reach from within to seek success. As a young entreprenuer, I can definitely say that for me, I will rate my success when I have accomplished all my goals. I’m still at the beginning stages, even though I have accomplished some of my goals. Once you laid the foundation or roadmap of your future, it’s your decision to execute the plan.
How do you rate your success? Please feel free to provide comments and feedback
